Brain and spinal cord trauma

...........................................................

Symptoms of traumatic brain or spinal injuries can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage. Generally, there are six abnormal states of consciousness that can result from a traumatic brain injury: stupor, coma, persistent vegetative state, minimally conscious state, locked-in syndrome, and brain death. Spinal cord injuries cause myelopathy or damage to fiber tracts that carry sensation and motor signals to and from the brain. It also damages gray matter in the central part of the spine, causing segmental losses of interneurons and motorneurons.

Small children with moderate to severe TBI may have symptoms but have difficulty communicating them. Signs seen in young children include persistent crying, inability to be consoled, listlessness, refusal to nurse or eat, and irritability.

Please contact NSPC (631) 983-8400 for more information or to schedule an appointment.
